Samarium is a chemical element with the symbol Sm and atomic number 62, belonging to the lanthanide series of rare-earth metals in the periodic table. It appears as a moderately hard, silvery lustrous metal that slowly tarnishes in air and has a density of 7.52 g/cm³ at room temperature.

First isolated in 1879 by French chemist Paul-Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran from the mineral samarskite via spectroscopic detection of its unique absorption lines, samarium was named after the ore from which it was extracted, honoring Russian mine official Vasili Samarsky-Bykhovets.

Although relatively abundant in Earth’s crust at about 6 parts per million—more so than tin or tungsten—samarium occurs primarily in minerals like monazite and bastnäsite and is obtained commercially through ion-exchange or solvent extraction from rare-earth ores.

Of the 14 rare earth elements that make up the lanthanide series (not counting promethium) five are too reactive to remain in their elemental state in open air and must be kept in oil, or preferably sealed in glass with argon.

Samarium is a borderline number six. Shiny just after completing the last processing steps at the lab, it begins to tarnish slowly. The smaller the piece and the higher the humidity the faster it will darken.

Very small pieces may completely rust away into powder while a big chunk can remain at least partially lustrous for many years. Even the briefest exposure to air can doom the surface to some tarnishing even if immediately placed in argon.

Somewhat perplexingly, this tarnishing may not be evident for days or weeks which may lead one to suspect a leak. The damage was there all along, it just took a while for it to manifest at a macroscopic level.

Samarium is a silvery-white, moderately hard rare-earth metal that tarnishes slowly in air and ignites when heated.[3] Its density is 7.52 g/cm³ at 25 °C. The element melts at 1072 °C and boils at 1794 °C.

In its standard state, samarium adopts a rhombohedral crystal structure, characteristic of certain lanthanides. The atomic radius is approximately 180 pm. Samarium exhibits electrical resistivity of 9.4 × 10⁻⁷ Ω·m and thermal conductivity of 13.3 W/(m·K).

Elemental samarium displays complex magnetic behavior, including antiferromagnetic ordering at low temperatures and paramagnetic properties at higher temperatures.
