Parabuthus transvaalicus (Transvaal thick-tailed scorpion) produces potent, fast-acting neurotoxic venom that is highly specific to insects and mammals. It can deliver “prevenom” (first sting) and “venom” (subsequent stings), both causing severe pain, intense systemic distress, and possible death. It is one of the most venomous scorpions in southern Africa.

A large scorpion reaching a length of around 15cm with the tail extended. It is usually dark brown to black in colour often with lighter pincers.

It occupies bushveld habitat and can be found under rocks, logs and other debris. It often ventures into houses and can also be found under outside lights at night, hunting insects and other prey.

It occurs from Marble hall north into Mpumalanga, Limpopo and North-west as well as into southern Botswana and Zimbabwe and east into Mozambique.

May be confused with thicktail scorpion but colour and distribution are unique. The venom is of medical importance and antivenom is effective for stings.
