Thulium is a chemical element with the atomic number 69 and symbol Tm, belonging to the lanthanide series of the periodic table and recognized as the least abundant of the stable rare earth elements. It appears as a soft, silver-gray metal that is malleable and ductile enough to be cut with a knife at room temperature.

As a member of the f-block in period 6, thulium has an atomic weight of approximately 168.93 and exists primarily in the +3 oxidation state, forming a basic oxide and exhibiting low electronegativity of 1.25 on the Pauling scale. Its sole stable isotope, Tm, constitutes 100% of naturally occurring thulium, while 25 radioactive isotopes are known, ranging from mass 152 to 176.

Thulium was discovered in 1879 by Swedish chemist Per Theodor Cleve through spectroscopic analysis of erbia (erbium oxide) derived from the mineral gadolinite, with the element named after Thule, the ancient name for Scandinavia; it was first isolated in relatively pure form in 1911 by Charles James.

In nature, thulium occurs in trace amounts—about 0.007% in monazite sands—and is roughly as rare as silver, with an average crustal abundance of around 0.3 parts per million, making commercial extraction challenging and typically involving ion-exchange processes from rare earth mineral concentrates. Production involves reducing thulium oxide with lanthanum metal or calcium under vacuum.

Physically, it has a density of 9.32 g/cm³, melts at 1545°C, and boils at 1950°C, displaying typical lanthanide properties such as tarnishing in air and reacting with water to release hydrogen.

Thulium’s applications remain limited due to its scarcity and cost, but it serves as a radiation source in portable X-ray machines via neutron activation of Tm to produce Tm, which emits soft X-rays and gamma rays; it is also used in ferrites for microwave applications, as a dopant in fiber lasers for telecommunications, and shows potential in high-temperature superconductors and as an energy source through Tm beta decay.

In 2025, thulium was added to the U.S. list of critical minerals. Biologically, thulium exhibits low to moderate acute toxicity, requiring careful handling to avoid inhalation or ingestion, though it has no known essential role in living organisms.
