Lutetium (Lu) is a rare-earth metal and the final, densest, and highest-melting member of the lanthanide series. Primarily sourced from monazite sand, this expensive element is challenging to isolate, costing significantly more than gold.

It is primarily used as a catalyst in petroleum cracking and in specialized medical applications, including targeted cancer therapies using the isotope Lutetium-177.

Lutetium is a chemical element; it has symbol Lu and atomic number 71. It is a silvery white metal, which resists corrosion in dry air, but not in moist air. Lutetium has the highest Brinell hardness of any lanthanide, at 890–1300 MPa.
