Osmium demonstrates exceptional mechanical hardness, with a Mohs hardness of 7.0 and a Vickers hardness of approximately 4000 MPa, establishing it as the hardest known pure metal. Its melting point is 3033 °C (3306 K), and its boiling point is 5012 °C (5285 K), reflecting strong metallic bonding characteristic of platinum-group elements.

The element adopts a hexagonal close-packed (hcp) crystal structure with space group P6₃/mmc and lattice constants a = 0.2734 nm and c = 0.4317 nm at room temperature.

Osmium has a specific heat capacity of 0.130 J/g·K and a thermal conductivity of 87.6 W/m·K, indicating moderate heat transport compared to other transition metals.
