Praseodymium is a soft, silvery-white, ductile, and malleable rare earth metal in the lanthanide series of the periodic table, with atomic number 59 and chemical symbol Pr.

Discovered in 1885 by Austrian chemist Carl Auer von Welsbach through the fractional crystallization of didymium salts into components yielding green and rose-colored solutions, praseodymium derives its name from Greek terms meaning “green twin,” reflecting its oxide’s color and prior association with neodymium.

It constitutes approximately 9.2 parts per million of the Earth’s crust, ranking as the fourth-most abundant lanthanide, and primarily occurs in minerals such as monazite and bastnäsite.

Praseodymium finds key applications in high-performance permanent magnets alloyed with neodymium for electric motors and wind turbines, as well as in aircraft engine alloys, ceramic cores, and glass tinting for welders’ goggles due to its yellow coloration and UV absorption properties.
