Rhodium is a chemical element with the symbol Rh and atomic number 45. It is a rare, silvery-white, hard, corrosion-resistant transition metal in group 9 of the periodic table, known for its high reflectivity and chemical inertness.

Discovered in 1803 by English chemist William Hyde Wollaston from crude platinum ore, the element was named after the Greek word rhodon (rose) due to the rose-red color of its chloride compounds.

Rhodium exhibits notable physical properties, including a melting point of 1964 °C, a boiling point of 3695 °C, and a density of 12.41 g/cm³ at room temperature, where it appears as a solid. Chemically, rhodium is insoluble in water, acids, and aqua regia but can be dissolved in fused potassium bisulfate; it is highly resistant to oxidation and tarnishing in air at room temperature.

Rhodium is a colorless, bright shade of gray visually indistinguishable from platinum but nearly half its density. Being extremely brittle and nearly impossible to cast means that even if it wasn’t horribly expensive there’d be little hope to see it turned into interesting shapes.
