The spine-bellied sea snake (Hydrophis hardwickii), also commonly known as Hardwicke’s sea snake and Hardwicke’s spine-bellied sea snake, is a species of venomous sea snake in the family Elapidae. The species is native to the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean.

The venom apparatus of Lapemis hardwicki, consisting of two functional fangs, their venom glands, and associated musculature, are described. The yield of venom per snake ranged from 2.4–5.2 mg. The LD50 of the crude venom varied from 0.7–1.4 mg/kg intravenously in mice. The toxicological, chemical and immunological properties of the venom are discussed.

Venoms from adult and subadult H. curtus individuals were compared using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC), matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS) to detect intraspecific variation, and the molecular weight data obtained with ESI-MS were used to assess toxin diversity.
