Available for sale here is Venom of Opistophthalmus Glabrifrons :
The venom of the Opistophthalmus glabrifrons (yellow-legged/rough burrowing scorpion) is generally of low toxicity to humans, causing mild to moderate local pain, swelling, and itchiness. While not medically significant, stings can cause severe discomfort and sometimes systemic reactions like muscle cramps or palpitations.
Opistophthalmus glabrifrons is a medium-sized scorpion species in the family Scorpionidae, commonly known as the shiny burrow scorpion, rough burrower, or yellow-legged burrowing scorpion, characterized by its heavy build, large pedipalps, and burrowing lifestyle in arid and semi-arid regions of southern Africa.
Adults typically measure 9–12 cm in length, with some individuals reaching up to 14 cm including the tail, and exhibit variable coloration ranging from yellow-brown to rust-brown or orange-brown, often with lighter legs, pedipalps, and metasoma compared to the darker trunk.
Native to dry habitats with hard soils across Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa (particularly Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, North West, and extending south to eSwatini and Kimberley), and Zimbabwe, this scorpion prefers areas with rocky ridges, woodlands, or open grasslands where it can excavate burrows up to 1.5 m long and 1 m deep, often spiraling anticlockwise and featuring excavated soil piles at the entrance.
It may be confused with other burrowing scorpion species in similar habitats. It avoids sandy soils that collapse easily, instead using its mouthparts to break up harder ground, and remains active on warm nights or before thunderstorms, with males wandering more widely during the breeding season from October to January.
Behaviorally, O. glabrifrons is a sedentary burrower that constructs shallow scrapes under rocks leading to deeper tunnels, preying on insects and millipedes—evidenced by discarded exoskeletons near burrows—and exhibits slow growth rates.
When threatened, it adopts a defensive posture, stridulates loudly by rubbing its chelicerae to produce a hissing sound, stings readily, and uses its powerful pincers to pinch painfully; females give birth to live young in January and February.
Opistophthalmus glabrifrons adults attain a total length of 9 to 14 cm, including the tail, making it a medium to large species among southern African scorpions.
The coloration of O. glabrifrons is variable but typically features a yellow-brown to rust-brown body, with lighter yellowish tones on the pedipalps, legs, metasoma, and telson. The carapace is light brown, while the pincers (chelae) are pale brown with darker tips. Population-level variations include darker brown forms and shades ranging to dark orange or yellow.
The venom of O. glabrifrons is classified as mildly venomous, causing intense local pain, swelling, and discomfort that typically subsides within 1–2 hours but may persist for days in severe cases, with no recorded systemic effects or medical significance for healthy adults, though anecdotal reports suggest possible unpleasant symptoms.
