The Mozambique thicktail scorpion (Parabuthus mossambicensis) possesses highly potent, dangerous neurotoxic venom that can be fatal. Stings cause intense pain, muscle cramps, and potential respiratory failure. The scorpion can spray this venom, which causes severe irritation or blindness if it hits the eyes.

Parabuthus mossambicensis, the orange flattail scorpion, is a species of highly venomous scorpion found in southern Africa. The scorpion is reddish brown to orange and grows up to 80mm in length.

A medium sized scorpion of around 8 cm with the tail extended. Individuals are usually light yellow to orange sometimes with a darker back.

It occupies burrows or hides under debris during the day often in red sand bushveld areas. It is known from Limpopo, Northwest and Northern Cape provinces in South Africa and then north into Zimbabwe, Botswana and western Mozambique.

It is similar in colour to the Kalahari Thicktail Scorpion, but usually smaller in size. The venom of this species is considered dangerous, and stings should be treated in hospital. Antivenom is not effective for the sting of this species.
